How popular is Vale Tudo in brazil?

Postby Suicide Silva » Sun Mar 21, 2004 4:39 pm

I am a big MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fan and i would just like to know, in the country that invented Vale Tudo, how popular is it over there? Do Vale Tudo fighters have celebrity status over there? Would they be instantly recognisable when they walk down the streets of Brazil? Is Vanderlei Silva considered a national hero in Brazil? I know Vitor Belfort is very popular because he starred in a popular realtity tv show and is currently datin Joanna Prado or whetever her name is. I know it is nowhere near as popular as football but it is a household sport in Brazil?

Good question Suicide.

Actually I would like to hear some commentary on this as well as commentary on the pit boys of Brazil... if anyone has any knowledge, understanding, in this field of culture and on these peeps (peeps is American street term or slang for people)?

yes they are

SHAMROCK,

is a joke.... lutador de marmelada how they say in Brasil. Got his ass kicked by Royce a guy that is over 50 pounds lighter... Fighters in Brasil don't gor respect for him

DAN THE BEAST SEVERN,

Well known but don't cause much respect either

TITO ORTIZ

I personally consider tito ortiz a fighter without skills. He can fight on UFC, but can't fight in PRIDE Japan

TANK ABBOTT

Sinco Victor Ribas put him to sleep in 90 secs he's a laughing matter in Brasil as well..

The only american guys that Brasilians respect are

Mark Coleman

Mark Kerr

Randy Couture

Tom Erikson

Despite the fact that some of them defeated and lost fights agains Brasilians they are all really good and very respected by brazilian fighters.

About the question...

Yes they are very popular and they would be recognized for the most part. In Rio de Janeiro where fighters are everywhere it's impossible for a famous guy like that not to be acclaimed for the fans. Things have changed and there was a time in Rio where jiujitsu would have a huge beef against luta livre and once Rickson Gracie kicked Hugo's ass in a beach for a couple of hundreds audience and is said to be a great fight. In those days fighters would be respected by fear, today professionalism gave them a whole new level of consideration. Pit boys are there as well, and they do their shit every now and them. But they are less than 5% of the entire group. In my hometown of Porto Alegre they would be easily recognized as well. And my master Ze Mario (one of the best jiujitsu fighters alive) that is originally from the Carlson Gracie team is a celebrity everywhere he goes.

The pit boys are basically hooligans who go to clubs looking to start trouble. They attacked people with beer bottles and ashtrays including a cop. The cop refused to draw his gun for fear of shooting an innocent person.

They didn't look so tough after 4 or 5 days in jail did they?

Hopefully the cops learned their lessons and next time they wil be more inclined kill one of these f*****g morons.

Vale-Tudo is very popular in Rio de Janeiro but not in the rest of the
country.

In Rio de Jeneiro? The response is: "yes".

Yes... but people don´t bore them... They can go to a shopping, beach,
restaurant, everywhere if no problem.

Pelí©, Ayrton Senna, Zico are "national heros". Wanderley Silva is only
another great martial-art fighter... we have a lot of them...

Football is more popular then vale-tudo
Volleyball is more popular then vale-tudo
F1 Racing is more popular then vale-tudo
Basketball is more popular then vale-tudo.

A lot of sports are more popular then vale-tudo in Brazil.

vanderlei silva is from my city, curitiba. Here the people treat him like a regular guy of corse with some diference, not like Japan that he is a god and they see him like an extra human hehehe.
Sometimes he give jiu-jitsu classes on an acdemy 6 blocks form my home for fun. And he got another vale tudo academy here in curitiba.
